Innovatus recently delivered the refurbishment and expansion of the Safe Assessment Unit at Shellharbour Hospital, helping to future-proof critical mental health and drug treatment services in the Illawarra region.
Working within an active hospital setting, the team carried out major demolition, reconfiguration, and new construction works, all while ensuring the facility remained operational throughout.
“Any time you work in a live hospital environment, the stakes are higher. But our team showed what professionalism and planning look like under pressure,” Innovatus CEO Nick Halakatevakis said.
“They delivered with precision and zero disruption to care.”
The works included the installation of new slab and footings, structural steel, cladding and roofing, along with full upgrades to key services, including electrical, medical gas, HVAC, data and lighting systems.
Internally, Innovatus delivered:
- Bio-Phylic design to make the facility more pleasant
- Care Gas services
- Nurse care systems
- Hepa-filtration systems
- New partitions and workstations
- Vinyl flooring and aluminium doors
- Custom joinery
- Strict live-site protocols for dust, noise, access, and infection control
The project was completed under a GC21 Design & Construct Contract with NSW Health Infrastructure in close collaboration with Gran Associates and Health Infrastructure, alongside a trusted team of specialist consultants and engineers including Hughes Bruce design, Woolacotts, Decode Fire Consulting, and Airmaster.
It also received positive coverage in Region Illawarra, following a press conference and site visit with the Minister for Health.
